GARAGE PROFILE

Obsession, Integrated: A Boston Garage Sanctuary

A modern Boston-area home where the garage and the cars live as naturally inside the architecture as out.

Outside Boston, Massachusetts, a modern structure prioritizes its automotive space. This garage was not an addition but a foundational concept for the home itself. It represents a deliberate balance of form and function, where the presence of machines informs the surrounding architecture, a theme closely examined in other Carchitecture features.

Design as Foundation

Anchored by a 29-foot glass-and-steel hydraulic door from Schweiss, the garage asserts its prominence. It is a central element, visible from nearly every lower-level room. The home office, positioned at its core, offers a direct vantage point into the space - a relationship also seen in The Garage House in Singapore, where the workspace is designed with a constant visual connection to the car collection below. This integration reflects a vision: to place automotive passion at the center of daily existence. The design considers both the vehicles and the inhabitants, blurring the lines between living and display.

Precision in Preservation

The interior environment is meticulously controlled. Radiant-heated terrazzo floors provide a consistent temperature. A luminous Cooledge ceiling diffuses light evenly across the space. A full humidity-controlled filtration system maintains optimal conditions for the collection. Every component serves a specific purpose. The floor drain, for instance, incorporates an oil-water separator, a detail reflecting a commitment to both function and maintenance. This level of environmental precision has a parallel in the A-Frame Workshop where the structure, originally built as a glass-blowing studio, was designed from the outset with industrial infrastructure: gas lines, substantial heating, and large opposing doors for airflow and seasonal control. This environment ensures the machines are preserved and remain ready for enjoyment throughout the year.

A Space for Connection

For the owner, Eddie, this garage is more than storage. It is a setting for shared experiences, a role also seen in the Analog Antidote, a personal garage workshop that regularly transforms to host gatherings, shifting from a private creative sanctuary to a communal space. The family hosts various gatherings here: baby showers, birthday parties, cocktail evenings.

The space adapts, transitioning from a sanctuary for vehicles to a communal area. Eddie describes it as a place to showcase his automotive passion and a multiuse space to share with others. The dramatic garage door, a favored detail, transforms the collection into a dynamic stage, inviting observation and interaction. This integration of passion and daily life creates a distinctive environment.
